The Kindness of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Person I Had Just Met Assisted Me Secure the Job That Changed My Life

In the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a low-cost journey to Europe with a travel partner. Because my companion was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had arranged a two-week stay there before heading to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the UWS known as International House. Once we unpacked, we went directly to the canteen, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I did, and I shared that I had just graduated with a scientific background and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – right next door to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I ought to seek a position with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The Iraqi student approached me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but right away told my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where opportunities abound – she responded: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his identity, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I lacked the bravery or self-belief to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and request employment. Moreover, I had long dreamed to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a position in Switzerland where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
