The Gaming Giant Hires Popular Battle Royale Lead to Boost Troubled Hero Shooter Ambitious Title
2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Change Comes After Mixed Response
Brinkman steps into the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' underwhelming early showing last autumn.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer informed employees about this decision through an official communication, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had revealed the necessity for a more defined direction.
Ismailer expressed that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a refreshed vision, aiming to satisfy player expectations.
Trend of Strategic Recruitment
This announcement echoes a comparable action taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they brought on an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock development group.
Below is the entire message from Ismailer's memo:
Dear Team—
I know you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a update, I stated the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative creators we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to continue.”
Given your hard work and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s the game testing phase was enlightening. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had improvements to make. It revealed the need for a sharper brand.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the criticism to heart and overhauled Project ETHOS with a revitalized vision - one that’s poised to deliver on its potential to our audience.
The trust in this project strengthens every day. To further the outstanding development you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce Ben Brinkman as the latest Lead of 31st Union. After several months of discussions, Ben officially joins us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s guidance and background in the competitive gaming genre is extensive, having devoted the recent years developing and managing some of the most well-known series in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in greeting him soon. We are all looking forward to continue observing the progress of the game in the months to ahead.
David
Experience of the New Head

Brinkman previously was employed at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, earlier in his career, had stints at other industry leaders.
Title Details and Vision
The upcoming game was revealed in last year alongside a public demo. At the time, the developers portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting step forward on the genre."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch reads. "Face the rivals with new abilities, risks, and tests that shift every match. Do you leave securely with your collected items? Or aim high, gamble everything, and hope your squad can achieve the highest spot? The choice is up to you."
The game does not have an official launch window or consoles, but enthusiasts can expect additional details as production continues.
